Gemini in Android Auto can now use your Gmail, Calendar and Photos if you opt in

Google is adding Personal Intelligence to Gemini on Android Auto. If you opt in, the in-car assistant can draw on your Gmail, Calendar, Photos and other Google apps to answer questions. Reports say the Android Auto rollout starts October 20, 2026, and cars with Google built-in get it in the coming months.

On October 20, 2026, Google said Gemini on Android Auto and in cars with Google built-in can now use Personal Intelligence. This optional setting lets the assistant pull details from your Gmail, Calendar, Photos, Maps and other Google apps, so you can ask personal questions by voice while you drive. You turn it on, and you choose which apps it can use.

What Personal Intelligence adds to Gemini in the car

Google's announcement says Gemini now works in Android Auto and in cars with Google built-in, and calls it a hands-free way to get things done while driving. The new part is Personal Intelligence. With it, Gemini can look through your own Google data, such as emails, photos and calendar entries, to answer layered questions that a general assistant couldn't handle.

Google's point is that you can talk normally and leave out the details. You don't need to read out an address or a booking reference, because Gemini can find them in your connected apps. Google also says you don't need to touch your phone to use any of this.

The launch post and the 9to5Google coverage give some examples:

  • Asking for your flight's gate and whether it's on time on the way to the airport. Gemini finds the answer in your Gmail.
  • Telling Gemini to take you to a doctor's appointment without saying the address, which Gemini looks up in your email or calendar.
  • Asking to go back to a place you mentioned or saved earlier, such as a coffee shop saved in Google Maps.

According to 9to5Google, the data sources match Personal Intelligence in the Gemini app and in AI Mode in Search: Google Workspace apps such as Gmail and Calendar, plus Photos, Maps, Search and YouTube.

When it arrives in Android Auto and cars with Google built-in

Google's post says Gemini is available in cars worldwide. 9to5Google reports the timing in more detail:

  • Android Auto: Personal Intelligence starts rolling out on October 20, 2026.
  • Android Automotive (cars with Google built-in): support is expected in the coming months.

This is a gradual rollout, so it may not show up on your phone right away. The official page we read doesn't say whether Personal Intelligence itself is limited by country, language or Google account type. Don't assume it works everywhere Gemini does.

Privacy: off by default, and you pick the apps

Google stresses that you stay in control. Personal Intelligence is opt-in. You decide which Google apps Gemini can read, and you can switch the feature on or off in your Gemini settings at any time.

There is one catch, reported by 9to5Google. If you've already turned on Personal Intelligence in the Gemini app on your phone, it will also work in Android Auto without a separate step. If you want the car assistant to behave like before, check your phone's Gemini settings before you drive.

For cars with Google built-in, 9to5Google says the personalized answers will only appear when your phone is in the car and connected.

Who this affects and what to do

  • Android Auto users who already use Personal Intelligence on their phone: you don't need to do anything. Once the rollout reaches you, the feature should work in the car. Review which apps are connected if you share the car or project the screen where passengers can see it.
  • Android Auto users who haven't opted in: nothing changes unless you turn it on. If you want hands-free answers about flights, appointments or saved places, you can enable it.
  • Owners of cars with Google built-in: wait for the update Google says is coming in the next few months.
  • Work or school Google accounts: the official post doesn't cover managed accounts. Ask your admin before you assume work mail and calendar will connect.

How to turn on Personal Intelligence for Android Auto

Google's instructions are short. Open your Gemini settings, opt in to Personal Intelligence, then connect the apps you want Gemini to use. According to coverage of the launch, you change this on your Android phone, and the setting carries over to the car when Android Auto starts. To turn it off later, go back to the same Gemini settings and switch it off or disconnect individual apps.
