Gemini Pro for Students: Only 1 of 24 Countries Gets Pro
Google's free student plan is AI Pro only in the US; 23 of the 24 country pages we read offer AI Plus, which comes with the Flash model. We gave 28 college problems to the Free, Plus and Pro models to see what that costs you.

Why trust this: every result, number and screenshot comes from a real run on our own accounts, not from the AI. How we test
Gemini Pro is free for students only in the US: a year of Google AI Pro for college students. Of the 24 country pages we last read on 1 November, 23 offer Google AI Plus instead, which comes with the Flash model, not the Pro model. We then gave the same 28 college problems to the Free, Plus and Pro models to see what that difference costs you.
Models tested on 27 Oct 2026; country pages read on 27 Oct and again on 1 Nov 2026, just before publishing. The country check was done by a script reading gemini.google/<country>/students/; the problems were sent through the Gemini API, not the Gemini app, because we do not have a student account to verify. Answers were checked by code against keys computed before any model was called. Claude helped write the scripts and this article; an editor checked every plan detail against Google's own pages, linked below.
At a glance
Key results
- Only the US page offers AI Pro. Of 24 country pages, 1 offers Google AI Pro (US) and 23 offer Google AI Plus. Canada moved while we were writing: on 27 October its page said the offer had ended, and on 1 November it offered AI Plus.
- The difference is the model and the limits, not the price. Both are free for a year and must be redeemed by 31 December 2026 with a payment method on file. Pro: 4x the Free usage limits, 5 TB of storage, then $19.99/month. Plus: 2x the limits, 400 GB, then £4.49/month in the UK and ₹399/month in India.
- On 18 ordinary coursework problems, all three models scored 18/18, including Flash-Lite, the model on the free plan.
- On 10 harder problems, the Plus model (Flash) and the Pro model (Argon) both scored 10/10; the free plan's Flash-Lite scored 8/10. Both of its misses came with confident, plausible working.
- Argon was the slowest: a median of 9.7 s per answer (16.8 s on the harder set, up to 62 s) against 7.7 s for Flash and 1.9 s for Flash-Lite.
- What we did not test: the Gemini app itself, its usage caps, Study Notebooks, Gemini Live, and the student verification step. These are API runs, one per problem.
Hands-on test
Setup
- Country check: a Python script fetched
https://gemini.google/<country>/students/for 24 countries on 27 Oct 2026 at 13:40 UTC and again on 31 Oct at 17:07 UTC (00:07 on 1 Nov in Vietnam, where the script ran). Canada was the only line that changed between the two runs. For each page it counted which plan name the page used ("Google AI Pro" or "Google AI Plus") and, on English pages, copied the redeem-by date and the price after the free year. We then read the US, UK, Indian, Canadian and Vietnamese pages and Google's offer terms in full. The script and its raw output are kept with this article's source files. - Model mapping: Google's US plan page lists "Access to our Flash-Lite model" under Free, "Access to our Flash model" under AI Plus, and "Access to Gemini 4 Argon" plus the Pro model under AI Pro. We used the closest API models:
gemini-3.5-flash-lite,gemini-3.8-flashandgemini-4-argon. Google does not say the app runs exactly these API versions, so treat this as the nearest proxy, not the app. - Problems: 18 typical first- and second-year problems (calculus, statistics, probability, combinatorics, finance, economics, physics, chemistry) and 10 harder ones (Catalan paths, derangements, gambler's ruin, a double integral, the classic "triangle contains the centre" question). Every answer is a single number.
- Prompt: the problem, then "show brief working, then end with FINAL: <number>". Default settings, no tools, no system prompt.
- Scoring (code, not AI): correct if the final number is within 0.5% of the key. One run per model per problem.
- Cost: tokens × Google's paid API list price, including thinking tokens. All 84 calls together cost $0.24.
Who gets Pro, who gets Plus

The US page is the only one that says "Google AI Pro" in its offer: "The free Google AI Pro student offer is available to eligible U.S. college students ages 18+." The Canadian, UK, Irish, Australian, New Zealand, Indian, Singapore, Malaysian, Philippine and Nigerian pages use the same sentence with "Google AI Plus" instead, and the Japanese, Korean, Taiwanese, Thai, Indonesian, Vietnamese, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Brazilian and Mexican pages name Plus in their own languages.
Google's offer terms (last updated 19 August 2026) explain the split: "The subscription plan included in your Offer depends on the country or region of your eligible higher education institution." So your school's country decides, not where you browse from. The same terms say the offer is "not available on your school-issued Workspace for Education account", so sign up with a personal Google account.
Canada is the one to watch. On 27 October its page said: "Our previous student offer ended on December 9, 2025 and is no longer available in your region." When we re-read it on 1 November that line was gone, replaced by "The free-of-charge Google AI Plus student offer is available to eligible university students aged 18+." So check your own country's page before you trust any list, ours included.
The English-language Plus pages (and the Vietnamese one, which we also read in full) say that "students whose 2025 AI Pro trial has expired can qualify". So students who had Pro through last year's offer can sign up again, but outside the US they come back on Plus.
| Google AI Pro (US student plan) | Google AI Plus (student plan elsewhere) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who | US college students, 18+ | university students, 18+ |
| Model in the Gemini app | Flash, Pro model, Gemini 4 Argon | Flash |
| Usage limits vs Free | 4x | 2x |
| Storage | 5 TB | 400 GB |
| Redeem by | 31 Dec 2026 | 31 Dec 2026 (all English pages; also in Google's offer terms) |
| After the free year | $19.99/month | £4.49 (UK), €4.99 (Ireland), $6.99 (Canada), ₹399 (India) per month |
Both plans need a payment method at sign-up and renew automatically, so put a reminder in your calendar for the end of the year if you do not want to pay.
What the Pro model adds on homework
| Plan (closest API model) | Coursework, 18 | Harder, 10 | Median time | Cost of 28 answers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Free (gemini-3.5-flash-lite) | 18 | 8 | 1.9 s | $0.028 |
AI Plus (gemini-3.8-flash) | 18 | 10 | 7.7 s | $0.102 |
AI Pro (gemini-4-argon) | 18 | 10 | 9.7 s | $0.115 |

Nothing in our set separated the Plus model from the Pro model. Flash and Argon gave the same 28 right answers; Argon simply took longer.
The free plan's model is where the misses were, and both are the kind a student could copy without noticing:
- Gambler's ruin (#25). Flash-Lite set up the right formula, then computed (11/9)^10 as 6.13 instead of 7.44 and answered 0.161. The correct answer is 0.128.
- Triangle and centre (#28). It worked out 1/4 correctly, then decided that was the chance the triangle does not contain the centre and answered 3/4.
Both models on the paid plans got these two right. For a harder head-to-head of the two bigger models, see our Gemini 4 Argon vs Flash test.
What worked
What worked
- Reading Google's own country pages settled the question faster than any forum thread: the plan name, the redeem-by date and the price after the trial are all printed there.
- Re-running the country script before publishing caught a change we would otherwise have got wrong: Canada's offer came back within five days.
- For ordinary coursework (integrals, Bayes, NPV, a mortgage payment, stoichiometry), even the free plan's model got everything right with its working shown.
Where it fell short
What didn't work
- We could not test the student plan inside the Gemini app. Verification needs a real student, and the API is a proxy for the app's models, not the app.
- One run per problem is a small sample; a different phrasing could flip a hard question either way.
- Non-English pages did not give us the price after the trial in a form our script could read, so the table only lists prices from English pages.
Our verdict
If you are a US college student, claim AI Pro: it is free for a year and the extra storage and limits are real. Then put a reminder in your calendar, because it renews at $19.99 a month.
Everywhere else, the free plan is AI Plus, and on homework-level maths that is not a downgrade we could measure. Its Flash model matched Argon on all 28 problems. What you give up is capacity: 2x instead of 4x the Free limits, and 400 GB instead of 5 TB, which we could not measure. Plus is still worth claiming over staying on Free, because the free plan's model is the one that slipped, twice, with confident working.
Our view: do not pay $19.99 a month for Pro just for coursework. Pay only if you keep hitting the Plus limits or need something the Plus plan does not list, such as Gemini Spark.
FAQ
Is Gemini Pro free for students?
In the US, yes: eligible college students aged 18+ get Google AI Pro free for a year if they redeem by 31 December 2026. In the 23 other countries we checked, the free student plan is Google AI Plus. That includes Canada, whose page added it between 27 October and 1 November.
What is the difference between Google AI Plus and Google AI Pro?
On Google's US plan page, Plus gives the Flash model, 2x the Free usage limits and 400 GB of storage for $4.99/month. Pro adds the Pro model and Gemini 4 Argon, 4x the limits and 5 TB for $19.99/month.
Do I have to pay after the free year?
Both student plans need a payment method at sign-up and renew automatically at the normal monthly price unless you cancel before the year ends.
Can I get the student plan again if I had the 2025 offer?
Yes. The US page and the English-language Plus pages say students whose 2025 AI Pro trial has expired can qualify, but you must verify your student status each year.
