ElevenLabs Pricing Tested: Flash Gets 2x the Minutes
We timed the audio ElevenLabs returned for each credit on a free API key: Flash v2.5 gave about 125 seconds per 1,000 credits, v4 and v3 about 62–63. What Free, Starter, Creator and Pro list in minutes, and why the API page shows far more than the web app.

Why trust this: every result, number and screenshot comes from a real run on our own accounts, not from the AI. How we test
ElevenLabs prices its plans in credits, but what you are really buying is minutes of audio. We sent the same 506-character paragraph through three text-to-speech models on a free account, timed the MP3s that came back and divided by the credits each call cost. Through the API, Flash v2.5 gave about two minutes of audio per 1,000 credits; Eleven v4 and v3 gave about one. That one choice doubles the minutes. And ElevenLabs' two pricing pages list very different minutes for the same $6: about 30 in the web-app table, about 150 on Flash in the API table.
Measured on 30 Oct 2026 with an API key on an ElevenLabs Free account, from a Python script on a Windows 11 PC (WSL, Ubuntu 24.04). Prices were read from ElevenLabs' pricing pages that day and re-read on 31 Oct 2026.

Key results
- Flash v2.5 doubles the minutes through the API. 1,000 credits bought 124.9 seconds of English audio on Flash v2.5, against 63.3 on v4 and 61.9 on v3. Flash cost 253 credits for the paragraph; v4 and v3 cost 506.
- The "~10 minutes" on the Free plan is the v4 figure. Our v4 and v3 runs land on it (10.3–10.6 minutes from 10,000 credits). Flash through the API came to 20.8, close to the ~20 the API pricing page lists.
- Fast languages get fewer minutes. The same paragraph in Vietnamese was 446 characters and 24.7 seconds on Flash: 110.6 seconds per 1,000 credits, 11% less than English, because the voice read more characters per second.
- Paid plans list far more minutes on the API page than in the web-app table. Starter shows ~30 minutes under "Text to Speech (UI)", and ~75 (v4) or ~150 (Flash) on the API page. The API rate is the same on every plan: $0.04 per 1,000 characters for Flash, $0.08 for v4, which came to about $0.04 and $0.08 a minute of English at our reading speed. We tested only the Free plan; paid figures are ElevenLabs' listings.
- A per-key credit cap stopped our run cleanly. After 1,934 credits the key refused the next two calls with a 401 that named the cap and the credits left. Nothing was charged for the refused calls.
Hands-on test
Setup
- Account: ElevenLabs Free, 10,000 credits a month, no payment method. The month's counter read 0 when we started.
- Key: the same server-side key as in our ElevenLabs API key test, capped at 2,000 credits.
- Client: Python 3.13 with
httpx, callingPOST /v1/text-to-speech/{voice_id}withoutput_format=mp3_44100_128. No SDK. - Voice: "Bella", the first of the default voices the key listed. One voice, default settings.
- Text: one paragraph we wrote about reading a pricing page in minutes: 506 characters in English, 446 in Vietnamese, the same meaning.
- Models: Flash v2.5, v4 and v3 in English; Flash v2.5 and v4 in Vietnamese. Multilingual v2 and v3 in Vietnamese did not run (the key hit its cap).
- Checks: credits from the
character-costresponse header; audio length fromffprobeon each MP3; English and Vietnamese Flash files played back through ElevenLabs' speech-to-text (scribe_v1) and compared word by word with the original.
The measurement script and its JSON output are kept with the article source; the screenshot below is drawn from that output.

How many seconds of audio 1,000 credits buy
| Model, language | Characters | Credits charged | Audio length | Seconds per 1,000 credits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flash v2.5, English | 506 | 253 | 31.6 s | 124.9 |
| Flash v2.5, Vietnamese | 446 | 223 | 24.7 s | 110.6 |
| v4, English | 506 | 506 | 32.0 s | 63.3 |
| v4, Vietnamese | 446 | 446 | 27.6 s | 61.8 |
| v3, English | 506 | 506 | 31.3 s | 61.9 |
The credit side is simple: through the API, Flash charged half a credit per character and v4 and v3 charged one. ElevenLabs' pricing FAQ says the same thing in general terms: Flash and Turbo models get "discounted pricing" for API usage, between 0.5 and 1 credit per character. The same FAQ's per-product list gives text to speech as about 1 credit per character, without the API discount.
The audio side varies more than people expect. Our voice read about 950–970 English characters a minute on all three models. In Vietnamese it read about 1,085 a minute on Flash, so each credit bought fewer seconds. If your language or voice is fast, budget fewer minutes than an English estimate suggests.
What each plan buys in minutes
ElevenLabs lists two sets of minutes, one on each pricing page. All figures below are its listings on 31 Oct 2026; prices exclude tax.
| Plan | Price a month | Credits | Web app, minutes listed | API, v4 listed | API, Flash listed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 10,000 | ~10 | 10,000 characters, ~10 min | 20,000 characters, ~20 min |
| Starter | $6 ($1 the first month when we checked) | 30,000 | ~30 | 75,000 characters, ~75 min | 150,000 characters, ~150 min |
| Creator | $22 ($11 the first month) | 121,000 | ~121 | 275,000 characters, ~275 min | 550,000 characters, ~550 min |
| Pro | $99 | 600,000 | ~600 | 1,238,000 characters, ~1,238 min | 2,475,000 characters, ~2,475 min |
Both listings assume about 1,000 characters a minute. Our voice read 950–970 in English, so expect about 4% more minutes in English, and fewer in a faster language. On Free, our measured minutes match both listings.
The gap on paid plans comes from how the API is sold. The API page says API usage "is billed in US dollars, not credits", and each plan's API allowance is its monthly price at the per-character rate: $6 at $0.08 per 1,000 characters is 75,000 characters. On Free we saw credits drop at 0.5 per character on Flash, which matches the 20,000 listed. We have not run a paid plan, so check your own usage page after the first calls.
The web-app minutes sit under "Text to Speech (UI)" on the pricing page, and the page does not say which model they assume. We only tested the API, not the web app.
Paid plans add things the Free plan lacks: the pricing page lists the Commercial License and Instant Voice Cloning from Starter, and Professional Voice Cloning from Creator. On Free, our key's subscription details reported instant voice cloning as unavailable. Unused credits on paid plans roll over for up to two months; the FAQ says rollover does not apply to the Free plan.
Cost per minute: API against the web app
The API pricing page lists text to speech at $0.08 per 1,000 characters for v4, v3 and Multilingual v2, and $0.04 for Flash and Turbo. The rate is the same in every column from "Free / Pay as you go" to Business, so moving up a plan does not lower the API price per character. The web-app table lists a price for each extra minute, and that one does fall.
| Route | Price per minute |
|---|---|
| API, Flash, any plan (listed rate, our English reading speed) | ~$0.038 |
| API, v4, any plan (listed rate, our English reading speed) | ~$0.076 |
| Web app, extra minute on Starter (listed) | ~$0.20 |
| Web app, extra minute on Creator (listed) | ~$0.18 |
| Web app, extra minute on Pro (listed) | ~$0.17 |
The page also lists v4 Turbo and v3 Conversational at $0.04, half the price of v4 and v3. We did not test either. We did not run a pay-as-you-go account, so we cannot say how its billing behaves in practice (minimum top-ups, for example, are not on the pricing page). Our free key drew from the 10,000 plan credits, not from dollars.
Did the cheaper model sound right?
We played the two Flash files back through ElevenLabs' speech-to-text. English came back with 0 word errors out of 98. Vietnamese came back with 5 errors out of 100 words (5%), for example "dịch vụ trừ" heard as "dịch vũ trụ". A machine transcript cannot tell whether the error was in the voice or in the listener, and it says nothing about how natural the voice sounds. In our earlier test with a shorter sentence, v4 and v3 matched Flash on Vietnamese.
What worked
What worked
- The
character-costheader gave the exact credit cost of every call as it happened. ffprobeon the returned MP3 gave audio length to the hundredth of a second, so minutes per plan come from measured files, not from an assumed reading speed.- The 2,000-credit cap on the key did what it should: the run stopped with a clear message and no surprise charge.
Where it fell short
What didn't work
- The account's usage counter lagged again. Straight after the run,
/v1/user/subscriptionshowed 982 credits used while the headers added up to 1,934 for text to speech alone; a few minutes later it showed 2,000. - We set the cap too low for the full plan, so Multilingual v2 and Vietnamese v3 have no numbers here.
- One voice and one paragraph. Speaking speed varies by voice, and a slower voice would buy more seconds per credit. Take the ratios (Flash about 2x) as the finding, not the exact seconds.
Our verdict
Read ElevenLabs pricing in seconds per credit, not credits per month. If you can work through the API, do: on ElevenLabs' own listings it costs about 40% of the Starter web-app minute on v4 and about a fifth on Flash. If Flash v2.5 sounds good enough for your text, use it, because it doubles your minutes at any level. Do not upgrade to get a lower API rate, since there isn't one. Pay for a plan when you need what it adds: the commercial licence, voice cloning or the larger monthly allowance.

Frequently asked questions
How many minutes of audio do ElevenLabs plans give?
In the web app, the pricing page lists about 10 minutes on Free, 30 on Starter, 121 on Creator and 600 on Pro. Through the API, it lists about 10, 75, 275 and 1,238 on v4, and twice that on Flash. Our Free-plan run matched both; we did not test paid plans.
How many credits does a minute of ElevenLabs audio cost?
In our test, a minute of English cost about 480 credits on Flash v2.5 and about 950–970 on v4 and v3, through the API. A faster voice or language uses more.
Is ElevenLabs pay-as-you-go cheaper than a plan?
Not per character. The API page lists the same rates on pay-as-you-go and on every plan: $0.04 per 1,000 characters for Flash, $0.08 for v4, about $0.04 and $0.08 per minute at our reading speed. A plan adds an allowance and features such as the commercial licence. We did not test pay-as-you-go billing itself.
Do ElevenLabs credits roll over?
On paid plans, for up to two months while the subscription stays active, according to the pricing FAQ. Free plan credits do not roll over.
Does the Free plan allow commercial use?
The pricing page lists the Commercial License from Starter up, not on Free.
